So we have arrived in 2022, Boris has allowed the privilege of starting the year relatively normal. You're fresh with all of the ideas of what you want to achieve, you have your pen ready, a cup of herbal tea ( as this one of your lifestyles changes for the year ahead) and your journal open. Your mood is that of an eager child, you know what you want to achieve and you start power writing your list. It feels great doesn’t it?? You are definitely going to achieve all of these goals is your mindset right now.

Fast forward two weeks, we are now on the 14th January. How do you feel about those new goals? Fast forward to April, how many of those goals have you achieved, are you still attending the gym 2 times per week as you first stated (remember to cancel that Gym membership, or you could end up losing unnecessary money).

Goals are something that can be set at any time of the year, they can be short term, med term or long term. Depending on what you want to achieve will be very much dependent on what type of goal that you set. The key to setting goals is to set them with intention, the intention to not only achieve the goal but to also have fun while doing so.

Mindfulness helps us to set our goals in a manner that enhances the likelihood of us achieving them. Therefore it is important to pay attention to the mood that we are in when setting goals. Obviously the start of any new year is when we feel high energy for setting goals, especially as most of society is setting them so it feels as though we have a common interest, something to look forward to for the rest of the year, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Therefore if the start of the year is a time in which you set goals, but keep finding these Goals do not seem to make it pass the first two weeks of the year, then keep reading for some tips on setting goals and more importantly achieving them: -

  1. Passions - setting a goal in an area which you are passionate about allows for a higher success rate. If you are unsure what your passions are, then think about this before setting a goal.

  2. Purpose - the goal which you set will be purposeful to you, even if this includes providing a service to others.

  3. Vision - can you see yourself achieving your goal? Being able to visualise what life will look like after achieving the goal is something that helps to push you further.

  4. Love - set a goal in an area which you have love in will also enable more success in the goal becoming a reality.

  5. Feelings - how do you feel towards the goal that you are setting? What is the reason behind setting the goal?

  6. Awareness - before setting a goal, how aligned are you to putting in the work that will be needed to achieve it?

  7. Experience - do you already have experience in the area in which you are setting the goal? This is a bonus if you do, but not to worry if you do not as it allows room for you to grow and develop new skills.

  8. Crystal clear - once you have established your passions, purpose and vision. This makes it easier for you to see clearly what it is you want to achieve.

  9. Believe - this is probably the most important aspect of goal setting, there will need to be a deep burning desire for the goal to be achieved. Having faith in things that you are yet to see, is key to helping your goal become a reality.

Goals are more than just a list, they are your mind's way of creating a vision of how you see your life to be, over this year and many many years ahead. Therefore there are other ways that you may wish to collate the information. I really enjoy writing lifestyle statements and mission statements. This creates a story, surrounding how you see your life to be in the present moment and future. It is also a great way to go back and read through your statements to see how far you have come and what may have changed for you along the way.

Remember that goals are interchangeable as is life, once you have set a goal you do not need to be rigid in how this is going to be achieved, nor should you become disheartened if you do not achieve the goal. The whole purpose of setting the goal is to have a guideline, to which you are working towards, whilst also remembering that some goals are so huge, that it may take you five years to achieve it.

Finally, an easy way to break goals down into manageable steps is to set the goals across the following areas of life. Mostly society will call these Life goals, however I like to refer to them as lifestyle goals:

  • Spiritual

  • Personal growth

  • Relationships

  • Career/Business

  • Fun and Recreation

  • Money

  • Family

  • Health

Goal setting should be a fun task, it really allows you to play with the many ideas which you have floating around in your mind that you would like to turn into reality. We are all capable of achieving our life goals, from large goals to small goals. And at each step, for every achievement remember to reward yourself. You have worked hard, so the least you could do is have some fun!

Happy New Year, I hope that this year is full of Love, Blessings and Goal Smashing!!
