“The words victim and victor have the same root origin. The prefix vict comes from latin and means to conquer. Of course, the victor is the one who does the conquering and the victim is the one who is conquered. Strange how two words can be so similar in origin, but so diametrically opposed in meaning “ (randomlightbulbmoments.com, 2012)
Victim or victor?
There is a thin line between the two, victims will play on the role of everything going wrong for them, and seek others who can sympathise with what may seem like a down trodden life... the victor will accept what has happened and look at the silver lining which may arise from every problem to make their life better. People who play the victim role can literally drain the energy out of you, if you are unaware of what they are doing or how they feed off your energy, this can leave you feeling drained even when they are not occupying your space. Not all people who play the victim - but a great deal of them may have narcissistic tendencies, these can been very detrimental to your health, mindset and general view of life. ( if your unfamiliar with the traits of a narcissist check out www.asscgroup.com or visit Assc Direct via YouTube). (I will blog narcissist at a later date) A victor on the other hand will deal with what life has thrown at them, and use this as a platform to do better, be better and achieve better. Despite what they have been through, they still see a light at the end of the tunnel, and they will keep pushing forward until that light has finally been revealed! Victors allow others to look at their lives and see that a bad day might not be as bad as they think - I mean if a victor has survived and achieved there is still hope for those whom have never really experienced any real hardship! When a victim is faced with a challenge they see this as the world being against them, and will run with that feeling and let everyone who comes into their path hear about it... you see at some point in our lives we all have moments when we feel as though we are victims, but how we react to it makes a huge difference. A victor on the other hand sees a challenge as something that needs to be overcome and will look at solutions to fix it, even if that means it will take a while... Say you wake up late one morning, you get dressed and still manage to get to the train station on time.. however your train has been cancelled. You finally make it to work on time... only to realise you have forgotten your ID badge and keys to enter the building.... what happens next?!?
With a situation such as this there are a mixture of positive elements and negative elements... a victor will be able to see the positives within this, a victim will not. To change a day like this, means that you must have the ability to change your mind set... the choice here is; everything is going wrong for me today.. or okay the day started off bad, but that don’t mean it will stay that way! Think about it?!? Our thought process is what changes our lives from victims to victories! The attitudes which we have play an important role in whether we see ourselves as victors or victims... you see we are the ones who are in charge of our future, not events or circumstances that come up in life. What we put in is what we get out, if we chose to only concentrate on the negative then we may only receive more of the negative... however when we focus on the positive then only positive situations may enter our lives (Denham, 2013). You will always notice the difference between a victim and a victor... a victim will moan about absolutely everything and everyone, always believing the world owes them something... a victor on the other hand is humble.. you only hear their story when you take the time to listen, and they never force their story on you.. they don’t need the sympathy! Moral of the story... We all have the ability to make choices which make us either the victim or victor.. so next time your faced with a challenge stop and think... is this really going to matter this time next week? Even if the answer is yes keep pushing through.. nothing stays the same forever! References The difference between a victor or victim.
